As noted yesterday, there are certain Marxist scholars at our universities that criticize what they see as the United States’ bullying tactics throughout our history.  I will not claim that the United States has always been right.  Like all nations, we are comprised of faulty, error-prone, sinful people.  And many times, our leaders do sinful and wrong things.  But neither side of the political spectrum is without blame in this.  Those on the political and cultural left often conveniently forget the error that was perpetrated on their side of the aisle in some of these “military adventures” that they criticize – Vietnam for instance.  Both political parties had a hand in the escalation of that war.  But what is supremely ironic about these Marxist scholars is that they often use the same bullying tactics in their own lives on a micro level that they criticize the United States for perpetrating on a macro level.

I’ve long lost count of how many stories I’ve read over the years about guest speakers at certain universities who were heckled, harassed, shouted down, and not allowed to speak because they espouse conservative ideas which certain groups do not agree with.  Here’s just one recent example of the bullying tactics used by scholars on the cultural and political left who rudely commandeered a meeting of students at one university just because they disagreed with the message that was being discussed at the meeting.  So much for the free exchange of ideas for which our universities are supposed to be a safe place.  There are plenty more examples of the craziness and bullying of these people at just one website, the Campus Reform website (but there are other websites which track and expose the madness).  Moreover, I personally have been the victim of heavy handed tactics of certain professors while I was an under-graduate.  And I have talked to many others over the years who have had the same experience.

This is the greatest hypocrisy of certain liberals/progressives and hippies of the 60's and 70's who talked about being open-minded and so full of liberal love, yet they will not respect the free speech rights nor will they respect the dignity of anyone who disagrees with them.  There’s a perfect example of the hypocrisy, close-mindedness, and hatefulness of certain liberal/progressive groups in this Jon Stewart special from five years back in which Code Pink targeted a Marine recruiting station for having the audacity to open up in the overwhelmingly liberal city of Berkeley, California.  In one interesting exchange in the Jon Stewart video, one of the protestors says, in essence, that the rights of the Marines are not important.   All this is not to say that Republicans and conservatives are perfect, but as I’ve taught my students this semester, your message has no credibility if you, the speaker or writer, have no credibility.  And hypocrisy is the quickest way to undermine your own message.  Clearly, this is an example of people who have knowledge without wisdom, without truth.

May you walk in the fellowship of God's boundless love today.

I'm a retired soldier, having spent 23 years of my life serving our country, actually 30 years when you count the reserve and National Guard time as well.  I believe in servant leaders, following the example of our Lord, and I believe in giving back to the troops once one has attained a certain status or level of success in life.  But I also believe in fighting back against corruption and incompetence wherever you find it if it hurts people.  Our national values were worth dying for.  They are also worth living for.  A man or woman can actually live a life by these principles of humility, service, love, duty, and honor, and have a significant impact on the world around them...if you have the dedication to see it through.
