You’ll recognize the lyrics of the chorus from the song “Signs,” “Sign, sign, everywhere a sign / Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind / Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?” The clever lyrics explicitly expressed the thinking and philosophy of a segment of the population in that era, the so-called “hippie culture.” Not only does the song express the values of the hippie culture, but it also makes a very strong religious/Christian statement that is rare in pop songs these days. Toward the end of the song, the hard driving electric guitar plays softly and the singer sings the words:
“And the sign said, "Everybody welcome. Come in, kneel down and pray"
But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all, I didn't have a penny to pay
So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign
I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine."”
With these simple words, this song expresses some profound theology, i.e. that the Creator, the Almighty God enthroned in Heaven actually thinks about us. In fact, His love is so great that He thinks of each of us constantly. Psalm 40:5 tells us, “Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” I cannot imagine how He can simultaneously think of every one of us and even fellowship with us personally and involve Himself in the most mundane details of our lives, but I know by experience that He does do this in my life and by witness of others that He does these things for them as well. People of the world who are unsaved and not enlightened by the truth of God’s Holy Spirit cannot comprehend the fact that God operates in such a personal level with so many people at the same time. They simply cannot grasp How Mighty and Powerful and Capable He Is.
Even for those of us saved by Jesus, God's thoughts about us are such an incredible mystery. Even after being saved for 44 years, and growing so close to God, walking in constant fellowship with Him throughout the day, I can’t grasp so many things about Him, about His Magnitude, Glory, Majesty, Power, etc. He is so far above me that I believe I will never really understand until I meet Him face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12).
I pray that you would realize and experience God’s Tremendous Love in your life and that you would see evidence of His Work and His Constant Thoughts about you.
