In Romans 12:2, we are told, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”  What the Apostle Paul is trying to convey is that what you set your mind on will determine the direction of your heart and the subsequent development of your character (either for good or bad) through millions of decisions played out in the countless individual moments that constitute a lifetime.  Rome wasn’t built in a day, as they say.  And these loathsome Castro brothers in the news who kidnapped and raped those women over several years didn’t become that way in a single day, either.  It takes a lifetime of dedication to anything, good or bad, to reach that level of perfection.  Unfortunately, if anyone spends a lifetime focused on feeding the fleshly desires, the sins of the flesh in pride, greed, lust, abuse of others, etc., then that person will perfect his or her wickedness as these men have done.

Galatians 6:8 warns us, “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.”  Whatever a person focuses on and dedicates to will determine what they become, for purposes of evil or good.  My own testimony is a polar opposite of these Castro brothers.  I have spent a lifetime focused on learning about God, studying the Bible, committing my actions to Biblical teachings, submitting to Him on all things, and on learning all things from His Wise, Gentle, Patient, Loving Training of my heart and mind.  He has taught me how to view things in the world (perspective), how to love and serve all those around me, what wisdom really is, what compassion really is, how to humble myself and subordinate my pride, how to be the best husband, father, and military leader that I could possibly be.  The lessons were endless and still continue.  I was a piece of work in the beginning of His training program for me, but I was probably no better or worse than any other average person.

As he has trained me, I have changed my mind about a lot of things.  I have recently learned what is the proper, loving Christian response to homosexuality.  I have known many gay people over the years and was never mean toward them that I can remember.  I may have made gay jokes at one time, but God taught me how hurtful such remarks can be, so I no longer label or judge gay people or anyone else.  As I stated, I was probably no better or worse than anyone else, but I at least did have a desire to be better, which made all the difference in the world when God was trying to teach me.  Among the things that he taught me out of is the idea I once had that homosexuality was the greatest sin or the chief of sins.  I no longer think that.  I think all sin is bad.  We tend to rank order sin in order to preen our egos, thinking that maybe we’re not that bad since we are not as bad as we judge others to be.  But as Jesus taught, this is faulty thinking.

More on this tomorrow.  I pray that you will all find God’s Will in your heart, that you will see His Work in your life, and that you will overflow with joy, being filled with His Loving Spirit.

I'm a retired soldier, having spent 23 years of my life serving our country, actually 30 years when you count the reserve and National Guard time as well.  I believe in servant leaders, following the example of our Lord, and I believe in giving back to the troops once one has attained a certain status or level of success in life.  But I also believe in fighting back against corruption and incompetence wherever you find it if it hurts people.  Our national values were worth dying for.  They are also worth living for.  A man or woman can actually live a life by these principles of humility, service, love, duty, and honor, and have a significant impact on the world around them...if you have the dedication to see it through.
