I recently saw a great commercial against gun control which was produced by Star Parker and her Center for Urban Renewal and Education.  In the commercial, the images that you see are of the horrible period of Jim Crow when black Americans were brutalized and even murdered by racists who wanted to “keep them in their place.”  The commercial reminds us of the most important reason historically for gun ownership which is to protect yourself and your property and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of your loved ones and friends.  It was the gun that made possible the settlement of frontier territories during the 19th century in America.  The gun ensured the safety and security of people from wild animals, unfriendly Native Americans, and even outlaws when there was no established law enforcement in the territories they settled.  The gun also provided a ready source of food from the game they hunted while traversing and settling the territories.  It is hard to say enough about the importance of gun ownership and the right of Americans to own guns without interference from the government and know-it-all liberals/progressives that just don’t seem to understand why people want to own guns.

Because of the importance of this right, the aforementioned commercial is so effective.  When there is no law or when the law will not or cannot protect you, you can always buy a gun somewhere in your community.  As the commercial mentioned, those that were attacking blacks were also the ones who did not want blacks to have guns.  These racists knew that a gun in the hands of a black man or woman in defense of their property and their people was the ultimate trump card.  The racists were all cowards anyway, wearing sheets to disguise their identity, coming in the dark of night so no one would be able to see and recognize them.  So against a bullying coward, any level of force is always effective because, once they meet force, they will always back down.  I have previously written about one significant example of blacks using guns to protect themselves when the law would not, and that is the standoff at Sylvester Carrier’s house during the Rosewood Massacre.   It was Carrier’s brave standoff against the racist mob that allowed several children to escape out the back of the house.

So, Star Parker is absolutely right in reminding the American public of the importance of gun ownership to blacks.  And this commercial comes at a very opportune time as liberal/progressive legislatures are trying to get any gun control laws on that books that they can get.  There is no real justification for what they want.  They are just trying to get the proverbial camel’s nose under the tent flap, using the emotion of the moment from the most recent school shooting for political gain.  Of course, they do have an argument for why we “need” these particular controls, but their arguments are arbitrary.  There is nothing objective in their arguments, and there is no empirical evidence to suggest that any of the measures they propose will have any effect on gun crime.  These laws will not stop the criminals.  Criminals will always be able to get guns on the black market.  The feds CANNOT control guns to the level that liberals/progressives envision.  For proof of their inability, you would only need to look to another historical power grab by liberals/progressives that failed:  prohibition.  The feds just could not stop the manufacture, transport, and consumption of alcohol during this period no matter how hard they tried.

Americans like their alcohol, and there is nothing wrong Scripturally with drinking so long as it is done in moderation and does not result in unlawful acts such as driving drunk.  I’m quite certain that God does not mind if people imbibe so long as they use caution and moderation.  As to whether any particular Christian believer, saved by Jesus, is permitted to drink alcohol, that is something that they must work out between them and God, but we should not automatically assume in our legalistic mindset that all consumption of alcohol is wrong.  But as much as Americans love their alcohol, they probably love their guns even more.  So, due to the popularity of gun ownership and the passion Americans have for this right, the federal government will never be able to enforce a significant ban on weapons.  If they tyrannically try to force this on the American people, then the people will simply ignore the laws just as they did with Prohibition and the idiotic 55 mile per hour speed limit that liberals/progressives tried to force on us during the 70’s.

I pray that you will all enjoy all the wonderful freedoms that we have in this country and that you will thank God that you live in a country where you have such rights.

I'm a retired soldier, having spent 23 years of my life serving our country, actually 30 years when you count the reserve and National Guard time as well.  I believe in servant leaders, following the example of our Lord, and I believe in giving back to the troops once one has attained a certain status or level of success in life.  But I also believe in fighting back against corruption and incompetence wherever you find it if it hurts people.  Our national values were worth dying for.  They are also worth living for.  A man or woman can actually live a life by these principles of humility, service, love, duty, and honor, and have a significant impact on the world around them...if you have the dedication to see it through.
