This week, I was watching a series called The Real West on the History Channel on cable.  The episode I watched was called “The Guns that Tamed the West.”  It’s hard for us to imagine what our ancestors went through to cross over and settle that area.  There were so many dangers that they had to contend with:  the harsh environment or terrain in many places, wild animals, sometimes crazy weather, and possibly unfriendly American Indians who were understandably not too happy about the invasion of white settlers.  Moreover, for a while, the west was a moral free-for-all, with all sorts of mean and evil outlaws populating the area.  So traversing this area or settling in it required real courage and good skill with a firearm.  There was no real, effective law for a long time, so the common man or woman had to be their own law, protecting themselves and their loved ones or friends with a gun.  One of the main gun manufacturers was Samuel Colt. His company used a few variations on this marketing slogan:  “God made man, but Samuel Colt made them equal.”  Actually, God did make people equal, but the gun gave every person the power on-the-spot to enforce and protect his or her equality and secure his or her person and possessions as well as the equality, person, and possessions of loved ones and friends.

Granted, we do not want to "live by the sword," but God does not mind if we protect ourselves, our property, and our loved ones.  Moreover, He already knows that we live in a fallen world, making it necessary to resist evil with violent force sometimes.  Thus, the firearm gave the common people security in this wild region, and it gave them a bonus, the capability to kill game for food, so that there was always an easy source of food on their travels across this vast land.  It’s hard for us to imagine how much that meant to average, common people.  Ever since those days, Americans have loved and continue to love their guns, for sport, for food, and for protection.  There are probably millions of gun owners who collect guns of all types for the sheer pleasure of owning the various pieces that have been manufactured throughout the history of firearms.  Many people even still collect and use “black powder” weapons that fire a mini-ball instead of the metal cartridge that we have been accustomed to buying and using in our various weapons, held privately and used in the military.  Because of the deep love that Americans have for firearms, I am almost amused at the liberal/progressive politicians thinking that they can enforce gun control and confiscate firearms so easily, as if Americans are as dumb as these people imagine in their cocktail party conversations.

Don’t get me wrong, the executive order that Obama issued is most definitely outside the domain of his Constitutional authority, deliberately side-stepping the legislative process, and is a violation of our second amendment rights and our Natural Rights given to us by God.  But I know just how corrupt and inept government is from first-hand experience.  The whole idea of controlling or confiscating every single one of the possibly billions of firearms and thinking that Americans will line up like sheep and humbly turn these weapons in is absurd.  Americans can be downright ornery people when you try to treat them badly.  Excessively bad laws will not be respected or obeyed by common Americans.  This has happened so many times in our history when half-witted politicians have dreamed up bad laws.  The 55-mph speed limit on highways, dreamed up by the green liberal/progressives in the Democrat party, was one of those bad laws that nobody obeyed, and now it is history except for a few congested metropolitan areas.   The CFL lightbulb is a bad idea forced on us by the liberal/progressives in Congress.  While it may save some energy, it opens up a whole new can worms with the problem of the mercury that is in millions of these bulbs.  In time, LED lights will get cheaper when they are more widely accepted by the public, when more manufacturers make them, and when cheaper methods and materials are discovered to make them.  Additionally, this solution, which came from the free-market rather than inept politicians, is far superior to the CFLs, is safer, lasts longer, and I believe is far more energy efficient.

Another bad law by these knuckle-heads, Prohibition, was equally disastrous, with virtually no one obeying it and unleashing a plague of crime across the country.  Prohibition was also dreamed up by the progressives of that era via the Anti-Saloon League who also decided that they were the “experts” that should dictate to everyone else how to live.  So it appears that we have had the liberal/progressive know-it-alls with us for quite some time.  New York City has their liberal/progressive jackass-in-chief, Bloomberg, trying to dictate to them what to eat and when to belch, etc.  Make no mistake about it, force and “experts” are NOT of God.  God does not need these people who know everything, but seem to always overlook the obvious, "straining at the gnat but swallowing the camel" (Mat. 23:24).  He cannot use them because their pride gets in the way.  He can only work in a humble heart.  God’s way is to power everything down and to spread wealth throughout the population and to give everyone a free choice.  Trying to force people with bad laws almost never works, at least, not for very long.  Force always necessitates more force, and it keeps getting more tyrannical until it destroys itself and its people, or the people get fed up and rise up against it, or until it just collapses under its own absurdity.  Any system without God is a ticking time-bomb waiting for its own self-destruction.

Now, I do not want to completely disparage the liberal/progressive movement.  Sometimes, they do have good ideas.  Women’s suffrage was a good idea.  Integration of schools was a good idea when people in certain regions would not allow total equality of all citizens.  Free exchange of ideas is good, but it seems that the liberals/progressives only like this method when they are not in charge, so their only interest in it is self-interest, not for pure principle.  Another good idea at one time, was unions.  In their inception, they gave a voice to workers who had to endure inhumane conditions in factories and who were treated tyrannically by bad bosses.  I, myself, was once a member of the Teamsters when I worked loading trucks for UPS for a few years in Atlanta, Georgia, during the 80’s.  Unfortunately, unions are sometimes infiltrated by mobsters, a problem that we had when I was a member.  Moreover, many unions these days are now tyrannical organizations who do not listen to their members, taking their dues, but then wasting the money or pumping it into corrupt politicians against the will of their members.  Moreover, God’s way is not the way of force.  He always gives choices, free will.  So you can rest assured, that, when people try to force everyone to toe the line with whatever legalistic rule in whatever endeavor in life (to include these places where the unions want to force everyone to join their union whether they want to or not), then Satan is behind it.

We’ll finish on this topic tomorrow.  I pray that you have a blessed day, filled with His Peace, His Courage, His Strength, and His Wisdom.

I'm a retired soldier, having spent 23 years of my life serving our country, actually 30 years when you count the reserve and National Guard time as well.  I believe in servant leaders, following the example of our Lord, and I believe in giving back to the troops once one has attained a certain status or level of success in life.  But I also believe in fighting back against corruption and incompetence wherever you find it if it hurts people.  Our national values were worth dying for.  They are also worth living for.  A man or woman can actually live a life by these principles of humility, service, love, duty, and honor, and have a significant impact on the world around them...if you have the dedication to see it through.
